Evidence supporting the use of: Sassafras
For the health condition: Congestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sassafras has a long history of traditional use in North American folk medicine, particularly among Indigenous peoples and early settlers, for treating a variety of ailments, including congestion. The aromatic roots and bark were often brewed into teas or used in steam inhalations to help clear nasal passages and ease respiratory discomfort. The traditional rationale was likely due to the plant’s pleasant, spicy aroma and mild stimulating effects, which could provide temporary subjective relief of symptoms associated with colds or upper respiratory congestion.
However, scientific validation for these uses is very limited. There is little to no modern clinical research evaluating sassafras or its constituents (such as safrole) for efficacy in treating congestion. Most references to its use are anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical records rather than controlled studies. Additionally, safrole, a primary compound in sassafras oil, has been found to be potentially carcinogenic and is restricted in many countries for use in food and medicines. As a result, sassafras is not recommended for medicinal use today, and its traditional application for congestion is not supported by strong evidence.
