Evidence supporting the use of: Arisaema amurense
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arisaema amurense, commonly known as Chinese cobra lily, is traditionally used in Chinese medicine, particularly as part of the herbal drug "Tian Nan Xing" (often referring to several Arisaema species). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), processed Arisaema tubers are used to resolve phlegm, relieve cough, and treat conditions such as bronchial congestion, asthma, and other respiratory ailments. The historical use is well-documented in classical TCM texts, where the herb is said to possess expectorant and antitussive properties, attributed to its ability to "dry dampness" and "transform phlegm."
However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. Some phytochemical studies have identified bioactive compounds (such as saponins and alkaloids) in Arisaema species, which may have mild anti-inflammatory or expectorant effects, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically validating its effectiveness for bronchial congestion in humans. Moreover, the raw tuber is toxic and requires specific processing to reduce its toxicity before medicinal use. Thus, while its use for bronchial congestion is established in tradition, high-quality scientific validation is lacking, and caution is advised due to potential toxicity.
