Evidence supporting the use of: Arisaema cum bile
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arisaema cum bile, also known as "Arisaema with bile" or "Dan Nan Xing" (胆南星) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily used based on traditional evidence rather than modern scientific validation. In TCM, Dan Nan Xing is prepared from the tuber of Arisaema species processed with bovine bile. It is commonly prescribed to address "phlegm-heat" conditions, particularly in the lungs, which includes symptoms like bronchial congestion, cough with thick sputum, and wheezing. The traditional rationale is that Arisaema cum bile helps to "clear heat," "transform phlegm," and "relieve spasms," thus supporting its use for respiratory congestion.
There are very limited scientific studies on Arisaema cum bile specifically for bronchial congestion. Some pharmacological research on the raw Arisaema species indicates possible anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects, but these are preliminary and not sufficient for strong scientific validation. The bile-processing is believed in TCM to reduce toxicity and enhance the phlegm-resolving effect, but this has not been rigorously tested in controlled clinical trials. Therefore, the use of Arisaema cum bile for bronchial congestion is primarily justified by centuries of traditional use in East Asian medicine rather than robust scientific evidence.
