The seeds and leaves are thought to possess expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help thin mucus and ease breathing. In TCM, Asian Plantain is said to clear heat and expel phlegm, making it a common remedy for coughs with thick sputum or chest congestion.

However, the scientific evidence supporting its use for bronchial congestion is limited.
