Evidence supporting the use of: Atlantic Cedar
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Atlantic Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) has a history of use in traditional medicine for respiratory issues, including bronchial congestion. In folk and herbal medicine, preparations made from the wood, bark, or essential oil have been used as expectorants and to help alleviate symptoms of colds and bronchitis. The aromatic properties of cedar oil, for example, have been inhaled or used in balms for their perceived ability to clear nasal and bronchial passages.
However, scientific validation for these uses is minimal. There is a lack of robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Atlantic Cedar for bronchial congestion in humans. Most references to its use come from traditional texts or anecdotal reports. Essential oils from related cedar species have demonstrated mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory settings, but these findings have not been extrapolated to clinical efficacy for congestion relief. Thus, while traditional use exists, the evidence base supporting its use for bronchial congestion is weak and primarily historical.
