For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chrysanthemum, particularly Chrysanthemum morifolium (also known as Ju Hua in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practices. It is traditionally used to help with respiratory issues, including symptoms like bronchial congestion, cough, and sore throat. In Chinese medicine, chrysanthemum is often included in herbal formulas intended to "dispel wind-heat," a pattern associated with colds, upper respiratory tract infections, and congestion. The herb is typically prepared as a tea or decoction and is thought to have anti-inflammatory and cooling properties.
However, scientific evidence directly supporting chrysanthemum’s efficacy for bronchial congestion is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that chrysanthemum extracts possess anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically contribute to alleviating respiratory symptoms. Nonetheless, clinical trials specifically evaluating chrysanthemum for bronchial congestion are lacking. Thus, while its use for this purpose is rooted in traditional practice, modern scientific validation remains insufficient, and the evidence should be considered modest.
