Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine derived from plants of the genus Ephedra. It has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for respiratory conditions, but its use for bronchial congestion is also supported by modern scientific evidence. Ephedrine acts as both a direct and indirect agonist of adrenergic receptors, leading to bronchodilation and vasoconstriction. By stimulating beta-adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, it causes relaxation of these muscles and dilation of the airways, thereby relieving bronchial congestion and improving airflow.
Several clinical studies and pharmacological reviews have documented ephedrine’s efficacy as a bronchodilator and nasal decongestant. Before the development of modern selective beta-agonists (such as albuterol), ephedrine was commonly used to treat asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions characterized by bronchial congestion. While it is less commonly used now due to the availability of safer and more selective drugs, its mechanism and effectiveness are well-established in the literature (source).
However, the use of ephedrine is limited by its side effect profile and potential for abuse. Regulatory agencies have restricted its availability in many countries.
