Gallesia integrifolia, commonly known as "pau d'alho" due to its garlic-like odor, has a history of traditional use in South American herbal medicine, particularly in Brazil. Traditionally, various parts of the plant—especially its bark and roots—have been employed to treat respiratory ailments, including bronchial congestion, coughs, and colds. These uses are largely rooted in folk medicine, where the plant is valued for its expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some phytochemical analyses have found that Gallesia contains sulfur compounds similar to those in garlic (Allium sativum), which may help explain its traditional use for respiratory issues. However, scientific validation of these effects is limited. While preliminary in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Gallesia possess antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, direct evidence supporting its efficacy for treating bronchial congestion in humans is lacking. There are no robust clinical trials or well-designed pharmacological studies to confirm its safety and effectiveness for this specific indication. Most of the support for its use in bronchial congestion remains anecdotal or based on traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific investigation.
