Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Neoandrographolide is a diterpenoid compound found in the plant Andrographis paniculata, which has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Traditionally, the whole plant extract—not specifically isolated neoandrographolide—has been used to manage respiratory ailments, including bronchial congestion, coughs, and colds. The use is primarily justified by this historical and ethnobotanical precedent.

Neoandrographolide itself is one of several active compounds in Andrographis paniculata, but most scientific research focuses on the crude extract or on andrographolide, a related but distinct compound. There is limited direct scientific evidence specifically linking isolated neoandrographolide to improvements in bronchial congestion. However, some in vitro and animal studies suggest that compounds from Andrographis possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which could theoretically help reduce bronchial inflammation and mucus production. Clinical trials on Andrographis paniculata extracts have shown some benefit in reducing symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, but these do not isolate neoandrographolide as the active agent.

In summary, the use of neoandrographolide for bronchial congestion is primarily supported by traditional use of the parent plant and its extracts, with only indirect, low-level scientific support for the isolated compound. The evidence is therefore rated as modest (2/5) and should be interpreted with caution.
