Peppermint leaf (Mentha × piperita) has a long history of traditional use for respiratory complaints, including congestion (bronchial). In folk medicine and herbal traditions, peppermint has been used to help relieve symptoms of colds, coughs, and bronchial congestion. The primary rationale is the presence of volatile oils—especially menthol—which produce a cooling sensation and are thought to help open nasal passages and airways, thereby easing breathing and clearing mucus. However, most of the evidence for peppermint’s use in bronchial congestion is based on its traditional use and the symptomatic relief of inhaling menthol vapors, rather than on robust clinical trials. While menthol (the main active compound in peppermint) is a common ingredient in over-the-counter topical rubs and inhalants for congestion, clinical studies have shown that menthol’s effect on actual airway flow is minimal, and the sensation of improved airflow is largely subjective. There is little direct research on peppermint leaf tea or extracts specifically for bronchial congestion. Therefore, while peppermint leaf is widely used and recommended in traditional herbal medicine for this purpose, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited.
