Evidence supporting the use of: Sagebrush
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) has traditionally been used by various Native American tribes as a remedy for respiratory ailments, including bronchial congestion. Indigenous practices commonly involved inhaling steam from sagebrush infusions or burning the plant to help clear airways and relieve symptoms of congestion. The aromatic and volatile compounds present in sagebrush, such as camphor and eucalyptol, are believed to have mild expectorant and decongestant properties, which may provide symptomatic relief. However, there is limited scientific research specifically validating sagebrush for bronchial congestion. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or comes from ethnobotanical records rather than controlled clinical studies. While related species in the Artemisia genus have demonstrated antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory settings, direct evidence for sagebrush’s efficacy in treating bronchial congestion in humans is lacking. Therefore, its use for this purpose is primarily supported by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation.
