Stereospermum, particularly Stereospermum suaveolens, is primarily used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda for respiratory issues, including bronchial congestion. In Ayurveda, it is known as "Patala" and is one of the ten roots in the classical Dashamoola formulation, which is prescribed for a variety of respiratory ailments, including cough, bronchitis, and congestion. The rationale for its use in these traditional contexts is based on historic texts and empirical usage rather than on robust scientific validation. There are some laboratory studies showing anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of Stereospermum extracts, but direct clinical studies in humans for bronchial congestion are lacking.
