Evidence supporting the use of: Angelica archanglica
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Angelica archangelica, commonly known as garden angelica, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. It has been employed to address a variety of ailments, including respiratory congestion. Traditional herbalists often used the root and seeds of angelica in teas, tinctures, or inhalations to relieve symptoms associated with bronchitis, coughs, and chest congestion. The aromatic compounds in angelica, such as essential oils (including α-pinene and β-phellandrene), were believed to have expectorant and mild antimicrobial properties, which could help loosen mucus and ease breathing discomfort.
However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of Angelica archangelica for lung congestion is limited and largely anecdotal. Few clinical studies have investigated its efficacy for respiratory ailments, and most available information stems from ethnobotanical and historical sources rather than modern pharmacological research. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that angelica may have anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial effects, these findings do not directly confirm benefit in human respiratory congestion. Therefore, while the traditional use is well documented, robust scientific validation is lacking.
