Evidence supporting the use of: Basil
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for respiratory ailments such as lung congestion, coughs, and bronchitis. The leaves are often prepared as teas, tinctures, or inhaled as steam to help relieve symptoms. The rationale for its use is often attributed to basil’s essential oils—such as eugenol, camphene, and cineole—which are believed to have mild expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. In Ayurveda, basil (specifically Holy Basil or Tulsi, Ocimum sanctum) is especially esteemed for supporting respiratory function and clearing phlegm. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, modern scientific studies specifically validating common basil’s efficacy for lung congestion in humans are limited.
Some laboratory and animal studies suggest basil extracts may help reduce inflammation and have mild antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically support respiratory health. However, clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional practice. Thus, while basil’s use for lung congestion is supported by tradition and some preliminary scientific rationale, high-quality evidence is insufficient to rate the support above a 2 on the evidence scale.
