Malabar nut (Justicia adhatoda), also known as vasaka, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for the treatment of respiratory conditions, including lung congestion, cough, and bronchitis. Its leaves contain alkaloids such as vasicine, vasicinone, and other bioactive compounds. Modern scientific research supports some of these traditional uses. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that extracts from Malabar nut possess bronchodilator, expectorant, and mucolytic activities. The alkaloid vasicine, in particular, has been shown to help relax bronchial muscles, facilitate the expulsion of mucus, and ease breathing in experimental models. Clinical studies in humans are limited but suggest that Malabar nut preparations can help reduce symptoms of congestion and improve pulmonary function in people with chronic bronchitis and asthma. However, the quality and size of these studies are not robust enough for a higher evidence rating. Overall, while traditional use is strong, there is moderate scientific validation for Malabar nut’s use in managing lung congestion, primarily supported by preclinical studies and limited clinical data. As such, it is considered a promising herbal remedy for respiratory support, but more high-quality clinical trials are needed to conclusively establish its efficacy and safety.
