Evidence supporting the use of: Ophiopogon
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ophiopogon japonicus (commonly known as Mai Men Dong in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine for the support of lung health and the treatment of respiratory congestion. In TCM, Ophiopogon is considered to nourish yin, moisten the lungs, and clear heat, and is often prescribed for symptoms such as dry cough, thick sputum, or throat dryness, which are interpreted as manifestations of "lung yin deficiency" or "lung dryness" rather than acute infectious congestion. Its use is typically in combination with other herbs in formulas such as Mai Men Dong Tang. While there is some preclinical research indicating that Ophiopogon extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, direct scientific studies specifically validating its efficacy for treating lung congestion in humans are limited. Thus, its use for this purpose is rooted primarily in traditional practice, with a modest level of supporting evidence from animal and in vitro studies, but lacking robust clinical trials. As such, Ophiopogon is best categorized as a traditional remedy for lung congestion, with a rating of 2/5 for the quality of supporting evidence.
