Sulfated polysaccharides, particularly those derived from seaweeds such as carrageenan, fucoidan, and ulvan, have a traditional history of use in various cultures to support respiratory health and alleviate lung congestion. Historically, preparations of seaweeds have been used in folk medicine to soothe coughs and assist in clearing phlegm from the airways. This use is largely based on the mucilaginous and demulcent properties of these polysaccharides, which are thought to coat and soothe irritated mucous membranes. However, while there is a long-standing tradition, scientific validation for the direct efficacy of sulfated polysaccharides in treating lung congestion is limited. Some laboratory studies suggest they may have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically support respiratory health. Despite this, there are few high-quality clinical trials or robust mechanistic studies specifically examining their effects on lung congestion in humans. Therefore, their use for this purpose remains primarily traditional, with limited scientific backing at present.
