Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vladimiria souliei, known as "Mu Xiang" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for a variety of gastrointestinal and respiratory complaints. Traditionally, it is believed to regulate qi, relieve pain, and resolve dampness and phlegm, which are considered underlying factors in lung congestion according to TCM theory. Ancient texts and modern TCM practice reference Mu Xiang as a supportive herb for symptoms such as cough, chest fullness, and phlegmy congestion, often in combination with other herbs in complex formulas.

However, the evidence for its efficacy in treating lung congestion is primarily anecdotal and rooted in TCM tradition and theory. There is a lack of robust scientific studies specifically investigating Vladimiria souliei’s effects on lung congestion or its mechanisms in respiratory health. Most available research focuses on its gastrointestinal benefits and anti-inflammatory properties, with only indirect or theoretical links to respiratory applications. Thus, while it is traditionally used for lung congestion in Eastern medicine, clinical evidence from high-quality human trials is lacking, and support for this use remains largely traditional.
