Evidence supporting the use of: White Nettle
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
White Nettle (Lamium album), also known as dead-nettle, has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine. Folk practitioners have used White Nettle for respiratory ailments, including mild congestion and coughs, primarily due to its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. Historic texts and herbal compendia, such as those by Maud Grieve and various European herbalists, mention the use of White Nettle infusions or teas to soothe irritated mucous membranes and promote the clearing of phlegm, though these references are largely anecdotal and based on empirical tradition rather than formal clinical studies.
Despite its traditional use, there is very limited scientific research specifically evaluating White Nettle's efficacy for treating lung congestion. Most available studies focus on its anti-inflammatory and hemostatic effects, or on its use for other conditions such as menstrual disorders. There are no well-designed clinical trials or pharmacological studies that directly validate its effectiveness for lung congestion. Therefore, while White Nettle is traditionally used for this purpose, the supporting evidence is weak and primarily based on historical practices rather than modern science.
