Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Paris polyphylla, commonly known as "Chonglou" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for various ailments, primarily as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and detoxifying agent. Its use in treating lymphatic congestion is not a primary or well-documented traditional indication, but it is sometimes employed in TCM for conditions that involve swelling, abscesses, or "phlegm-damp" accumulation, which can be loosely correlated with concepts of lymphatic congestion in Western medicine. The traditional rationale is based on its reputed abilities to clear heat, reduce swelling, and dispel toxins, which could hypothetically support lymphatic health or reduce congestion indirectly by addressing underlying inflammation or infection. Scientific validation for the use of Paris polyphylla specifically in lymphatic congestion is minimal. Most modern research focuses on its steroidal saponins (such as polyphyllins) and their anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and immunomodulatory properties. There are in vitro and animal studies demonstrating these effects, but direct clinical evidence for efficacy in lymphatic congestion (such as lymphedema) is lacking. Thus, while traditional use for related symptoms exists, robust evidence—especially from human clinical trials—is absent, meriting a low evidence rating.
