Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

American Elder (Sambucus canadensis) has a long history of traditional use for relieving congestion, particularly in the context of colds, sinusitis, and other upper respiratory tract conditions. Native American communities and early settlers often employed elderberry preparations, such as teas or syrups made from the flowers and berries, to help promote sweating and reduce symptoms of colds and sinus congestion. The flowers of American elder are noted for their mild diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) and anti-catarrhal (mucus-reducing) properties in herbal traditions. However, while this traditional use is well documented, scientific evidence specifically supporting elderberry or elderflower for sinus congestion is limited. Most modern studies on elderberry focus on its potential to reduce the duration and severity of influenza-like symptoms, with only indirect implications for sinus congestion. The evidence for American elder’s direct impact on sinus congestion is therefore largely anecdotal or based on traditional herbalism rather than rigorous clinical trials.
