Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bee hive products, especially honey, propolis, and beeswax, have been used in traditional medicine to support respiratory health, including the relief of sinus congestion. In various cultures, honey is consumed orally or used as an ingredient in warm drinks to soothe sore throats and reduce symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, including congestion. Traditional practices also include the inhalation of steam with honey or beeswax to alleviate blocked sinuses. Some of these methods are rooted in the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to bee products in folk remedies. However, while there is some in vitro and animal research supporting the antimicrobial activity of honey, direct scientific studies specifically validating the efficacy of bee hive products for sinus congestion in humans are limited. No large, well-controlled clinical trials have established bee hive products as a standard or proven treatment for sinus congestion. Thus, while the use of bee hive products for this purpose is grounded in tradition, the scientific evidence is weak, and their use remains primarily anecdotal and supportive rather than curative. Individuals with allergies to bee products should exercise caution.
