For the health condition: Congestion (sinus)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Perilla (Perilla frutescens), a key component of proprietary blends like "Benegut Perilla," has a long-standing history of use in traditional East Asian medicine. In Chinese and Japanese herbal practice, perilla leaves and seeds have been used for respiratory complaints, including nasal congestion, cough, and asthma. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) attributes perilla with properties that help to "disperse wind-cold" and relieve symptoms of the common cold, which often include sinus congestion. The plant contains various bioactive compounds, such as rosmarinic acid and luteolin, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects in preclinical studies. Some small laboratory studies suggest perilla extracts may inhibit allergic responses and reduce histamine release, theoretically supporting its use for allergic rhinitis and related sinus congestion. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically addressing sinus congestion are lacking, and most available evidence comes from animal studies or traditional use rather than rigorous scientific validation. Thus, while there is a plausible pharmacological basis for its use, and a strong tradition of employing perilla for upper respiratory symptoms, high-quality clinical evidence is limited, and its efficacy for treating sinus congestion in humans has not been definitively established.
