Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Black Seed Oil (Nigella sativa) has a long history of traditional use in various systems of medicine, particularly in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and North African cultures. Traditionally, it has been used to address respiratory conditions, including nasal and sinus congestion. The rationale behind this practice lies in the observation that Black Seed Oil contains thymoquinone and other volatile compounds, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and mild bronchodilatory effects. Historical texts and folk medicine report its application as an oil rub or oral supplement to ease breathing and relieve congestion symptoms.

However, scientific validation for these effects in human clinical trials is limited. While a few laboratory and animal studies suggest that Nigella sativa may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties that could theoretically benefit sinus congestion, there are very few well-controlled human studies specifically examining its efficacy for this condition. Most available evidence comes from traditional practices rather than modern clinical research. Therefore, its use for sinus congestion is best characterized as traditional with limited scientific support.
