Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Elder flower (Sambucus nigra) has been traditionally used in European herbal medicine to help alleviate symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, including sinus congestion. The flowers are known for their mild anti-inflammatory and diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) properties and have been included in teas and preparations intended to ease symptoms of colds and sinusitis. The rationale behind its use is thought to be related to its ability to promote sweating and possibly thinning mucus, thus supporting sinus drainage and reducing congestion.

While elder flower is a well-established remedy in traditional Western herbalism and is listed in various pharmacopeias for such uses, there is limited modern clinical research specifically validating its efficacy for sinus congestion. Most of the available scientific studies focus on elderberry (the fruit), not the flower, and on influenza rather than sinus issues. Some in vitro studies suggest anti-inflammatory properties, but human trials are lacking.

In summary, elder flower’s use for sinus congestion is primarily supported by traditional and historical use, with only low-level scientific support. Its popularity in multi-herb preparations for cold and sinus symptoms continues, but robust clinical evidence is absent.
