Galangal, a rhizome in the ginger family (commonly Alpinia galanga or lesser galangal, Alpinia officinarum), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of India. In these traditions, galangal is often used as a remedy for respiratory issues, including congestion and sinus problems. Its warming, spicy properties are believed to help clear mucus and promote easier breathing. Galangal is used in decoctions, teas, and sometimes as a poultice for this purpose. However, while its traditional use for respiratory congestion and sinusitis is well documented in ethnobotanical and herbal literature, there is limited scientific research directly examining its efficacy for these specific conditions. Some laboratory studies have shown that galangal contains compounds with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically benefit sinus health, but these findings have not been translated into clinical trials for sinus congestion. Therefore, while galangal’s use for sinus congestion is justified by traditional practices and some plausible mechanisms, the direct scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for this condition remains limited.
