Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Goldthread (Coptis spp.), a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine and North American indigenous medicine, is primarily valued for its antimicrobial and bitter properties. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Goldthread—especially the species Coptis chinensis, known as Huang Lian—is used for "clearing heat" and "drying dampness", which are broad TCM diagnostic categories that can include conditions involving infection and inflammation. Sometimes, Goldthread-containing formulas are used for symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, although not specifically or primarily for sinus congestion. The key active compound in Goldthread is berberine, which has demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in animal studies. However, there is scant direct clinical or scientific evidence supporting Goldthread for the specific treatment of sinus congestion in humans. The traditional use of Goldthread for respiratory complaints is secondary to its primary indications for gastrointestinal and infectious conditions. Therefore, while Goldthread may appear in traditional formulations for broader infections, its use for sinus congestion is based on tradition and is not strongly supported by clinical evidence.
