Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea) has a longstanding history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, to relieve sinus congestion and other respiratory complaints. Folk herbalists have employed Ground Ivy as an expectorant, using teas, infusions, or tinctures to help clear mucus from the sinuses and respiratory tract. Historical references, such as those found in early European herbal texts, describe its use for "catarrhs" (mucous conditions) and chronic nasal congestion. The plant contains various constituents, including volatile oils, flavonoids, and saponins, which have been suggested as possible contributors to its expectorant effects in traditional practice.

However, modern scientific research specifically evaluating Ground Ivy's efficacy for sinus congestion is limited. There are few, if any, rigorous clinical trials or pharmacological studies that directly support its use for this purpose. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional herbal texts, and safety data are also limited. Therefore, while Ground Ivy’s use for congestion is justified by tradition and supported by historical accounts, there is little scientific validation of its effectiveness for this condition.
