Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea) has a long-standing place in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and folk remedies, for supporting the relief of congestion, including sinus congestion. Historically, mustard seeds or mustard oil have been used in poultices, chest rubs, and inhalations to ease nasal and chest congestion. The traditional rationale is based on the pungent compounds in mustard, such as allyl isothiocyanate, which can produce a warming sensation, stimulate circulation, and act as mild irritants to promote mucus expulsion and improve airflow when applied topically or inhaled in small amounts.

Despite its traditional use, scientific evidence directly supporting Indian Mustard for sinus congestion is limited. There are studies suggesting that mustard seed preparations can have mild decongestant, anti-inflammatory, or counterirritant effects, but these are mostly indirect or based on related species. No large-scale clinical trials have confirmed its effectiveness specifically for sinus congestion. The warming and pungent effects may provide temporary subjective relief, but scientific validation is lacking. Therefore, the use of Indian Mustard for sinus congestion is best characterized as traditional, with a low to moderate level of supporting evidence.
