Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Laggera pterodonta is traditionally used in certain regions of Africa and Asia, particularly within Chinese and African ethnomedicine, to treat respiratory conditions such as sinus congestion, coughs, and colds. The aerial parts of the plant are employed in folk medicine as a remedy for symptoms associated with upper respiratory tract infections, which can include sinus congestion. These traditional uses are primarily based on the plant's purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, as described in ethnobotanical surveys and reviews (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2001; Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine, 2015). However, while traditional practitioners often prepare decoctions or inhalations from Laggera pterodonta for sinus and chest congestion, scientific research validating its efficacy for sinus congestion specifically is limited. Some studies have demonstrated the plant’s general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects in vitro and in animal models, which could theoretically support its traditional use for respiratory symptoms. Nevertheless, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or targeted research directly confirming its effectiveness in human cases of sinus congestion. In summary, the use of Laggera pterodonta for sinus congestion is rooted in tradition, with some preliminary pharmacological evidence, but scientific validation in this specific context remains insufficient.
