Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligusticum, notably Ligusticum porteri (commonly called Osha root) and Ligusticum sinense, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in North America and East Asia. Traditional healers and Native American tribes have used Ligusticum species for centuries as remedies for respiratory ailments, including congestion, cough, and sinus issues. The root is often made into teas, tinctures, or syrups, and is believed to help clear the sinuses, ease breathing, and reduce inflammation in the upper respiratory tract. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ligusticum sinense is classified as a herb that dispels wind and alleviates pain, and is used in formulas aimed at treating nasal congestion and headaches.

Scientific studies specifically validating Ligusticum’s efficacy for sinus congestion are sparse. Some laboratory studies have identified that Ligusticum species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could plausibly support its traditional use for respiratory infections and congestion. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient high-quality evidence to conclusively support its effectiveness for sinus congestion. Therefore, its use in this context is primarily supported by traditional knowledge rather than modern scientific validation.
