Mucolase is an enzyme preparation containing lysozyme chloride, which is used in some countries as a mucolytic agent. The primary scientific rationale for its use in treating congestion (particularly sinus congestion) is based on its ability to break down mucopolysaccharides in mucus, thereby reducing its viscosity and making it easier to clear from the airways. Several studies, primarily from Japan and East Asia, have investigated the efficacy of lysozyme chloride in respiratory conditions characterized by thick mucus, including chronic sinusitis and bronchitis. Clinical trials have shown that mucolase can help relieve symptoms of sinus congestion by thinning mucus, facilitating drainage, and potentially reducing inflammation due to its mild antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
However, the overall strength of the evidence is moderate. Most studies are small, not always randomized or placebo-controlled, and the majority are not published in high-impact international journals.
