Evidence supporting the use of: Qunice
For the health condition: Congestion (sinus)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Quince (Cydonia oblonga) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in regions like the Middle East and parts of Asia, for various ailments including respiratory and sinus issues. Historically, quince seeds and syrup have been considered soothing for the throat and sometimes recommended in folk remedies for coughs, sore throats, and congestion. The mucilaginous properties of quince seeds are thought to help coat mucous membranes, potentially providing relief from irritation associated with sinus congestion. However, there is very limited direct evidence—either clinical or pharmacological—specifically supporting quince as an effective treatment for sinus congestion. Most references to its use come from traditional herbal texts and anecdotal reports rather than controlled scientific studies. Modern scientific literature focuses more on quince’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings have not been robustly linked to sinus or upper respiratory relief. Therefore, while quince may have a historical reputation in folk medicine for easing symptoms related to congestion, current scientific validation is lacking and the evidence supporting its use for this specific purpose remains weak.
