Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sassafras has a long history of use in North American folk medicine, particularly among Indigenous peoples and early European settlers, for ailments such as colds, flu, and congestion. Traditionally, sassafras tea and infusions were consumed with the belief that they could help “purify the blood” and ease symptoms of respiratory congestion, including sinus issues. The aromatic nature of sassafras, especially its volatile oils like safrole, was thought to help clear nasal passages by acting as a mild decongestant and expectorant.

However, scientific research supporting these uses is minimal. There are no high-quality clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies confirming the efficacy of sassafras for treating or alleviating sinus congestion. The use of sassafras for this purpose remains anecdotal and rooted in folk practices, rather than being validated by modern science. Additionally, it is important to note that safrole, a major component of sassafras oil, has been identified as a potential carcinogen and is banned as a food additive by the FDA in the United States. Thus, while the traditional use exists, there is little scientific evidence to support its safety or effectiveness for sinus congestion.
