Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Terpenes, a diverse class of organic compounds found in many plants (notably conifers and citrus), have a long history of use in traditional remedies for congestion and sinus issues. One of the most notable terpenes, eucalyptol (1,8-cineole), is commonly found in eucalyptus oil and has been historically inhaled as a vapor or applied in balms to help clear nasal passages. The rationale for their use is based on the volatile nature of terpenes: when inhaled, they can produce a cooling or soothing sensation, and may help loosen mucus, making it easier to expel.

Although there are some modern studies on specific terpenes like eucalyptol that suggest mild benefits in reducing symptoms of sinus congestion (due to mild anti-inflammatory and mucolytic effects), most terpenes have not been extensively studied in clinical trials for this purpose. The use of terpene-rich preparations for congestion is therefore primarily grounded in traditional use, such as aromatherapy or herbal medicine. The overall evidence base is limited, and the efficacy is not strongly supported by high-quality scientific research, which is why the rating is moderate. People with certain health conditions should exercise caution, as concentrated terpenes can be irritating to the respiratory tract in some individuals.
