Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cowherb (Vaccaria segetalis, also known as Vaccaria or Wang Bu Liu Xing in traditional Chinese medicine) is primarily used in herbal medicine traditions, particularly in East Asia. It has a long history of use for promoting blood circulation, reducing swelling, and other gynecological applications, but it is sometimes included in traditional herbal formulas for cardiovascular support, including congestive heart failure (CHF). The rationale is based on its purported effects to "invigorate blood" and "reduce stasis," concepts central to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, which does not map directly onto Western biomedical concepts like CHF. There is minimal direct scientific research on Cowherb specifically for congestive heart failure. Most references derive from its role in compound formulas used historically or currently in TCM for symptoms that may overlap with CHF, such as edema or palpitations. However, clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies supporting its efficacy for CHF are lacking. Thus, its use is justified mainly by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
