Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are plant-derived compounds commonly found in fruits and vegetables. Their use in supporting or treating conjunctivitis (pink eye) is primarily based on traditional and historical practices rather than robust scientific evidence. Traditionally, bioflavonoids have been valued for their antioxidant and purported anti-inflammatory properties, and some herbal and natural medicine systems have recommended them for various eye conditions, including conjunctivitis. The rationale is that bioflavonoids may help reduce inflammation and support capillary strength, theoretically offering symptom relief in conjunctivitis, which is characterized by redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva.

However, direct scientific studies investigating the efficacy of bioflavonoids specifically for conjunctivitis in humans are lacking. Most available evidence comes from in vitro (test tube) or animal studies that show bioflavonoids can have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, but these findings have not been translated into well-designed clinical trials for conjunctivitis. As such, while their use persists in some traditional or complementary medicine circles, there is minimal scientific validation for their effectiveness in this context. Overall, bioflavonoids should not be considered a primary or evidence-based treatment for conjunctivitis, and conventional therapies should be prioritized.
