Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese raisintree
For the health condition: Conjunctivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Raisintree (Hovenia dulcis) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where various parts of the plant—especially the fruit and seeds—have been employed to treat a variety of ailments, including eye conditions such as conjunctivitis ("red eye"). In TCM, conjunctivitis is often categorized under "wind-heat" or "toxic heat" afflictions, and Hovenia dulcis is considered to have detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial for such conditions. The plant is typically included in herbal formulations that are applied as washes or compresses to the eyes, or taken internally to "clear heat" from the liver, which is thought to influence eye health in TCM theory.
However, while there is a wealth of traditional documentation supporting its use for eye inflammation, scientific validation is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in Hovenia dulcis, but there is little direct clinical evidence specifically supporting its efficacy for conjunctivitis. To date, no high-quality randomized controlled trials have confirmed its benefits for this condition, and its use in modern clinical practice outside traditional medicine remains rare. Thus, the use of Chinese Raisintree for conjunctivitis is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation.
