Evidence supporting the use of: Heal-all
For the health condition: Conjunctivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Heal-All (Prunella vulgaris) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including for ocular conditions such as conjunctivitis ("pink eye"). Historically, it has been applied as an eyewash or poultice in European and Asian herbal traditions, largely due to its reputed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Folk medicine sources have recommended Heal-All for soothing irritated eyes and reducing redness or swelling. However, there is very limited scientific research directly evaluating its efficacy or safety for conjunctivitis in humans. Most available studies on Heal-All focus on its general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory constituents (such as rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, and tannins) in vitro, not specifically on eye infections or conjunctivitis. No clinical trials have been conducted to validate its use for this particular indication. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition and plausible mechanisms, there is little scientific evidence to support these uses, and the overall quality of evidence is low (rated 1/5).
