Rating (out of 5): 1

Hedyotis diffusa, known as Bai Hua She She Cao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for a variety of inflammatory and infectious conditions. In TCM, it is sometimes applied for "heat" conditions, including those affecting the eyes such as conjunctivitis ("red eye"). The herb is believed to clear heat and toxins, which, in TCM theory, are implicated in inflammatory eye disorders. Classical and modern Chinese materia medica texts list conjunctivitis as one of the possible indications for Hedyotis diffusa, though it is usually used as part of a herbal formula rather than as a single agent. However, there is limited to no direct scientific research evaluating Hedyotis diffusa's efficacy specifically for conjunctivitis in clinical or preclinical studies. Most modern pharmacological research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antitumor properties in other contexts. While these general properties could theoretically be relevant for conjunctivitis, no controlled clinical trials or robust experimental studies directly support its use for this condition. Therefore, use of Hedyotis diffusa for conjunctivitis is primarily justified by traditional practice, rather than by modern scientific validation.
