Evidence supporting the use of: Sandalwood
For the health condition: Conjunctivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sandalwood (often Santalum album or related species) has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions, including eye ailments such as conjunctivitis. In these traditions, sandalwood paste or oil is sometimes applied near the eyes (never directly in the eye) to reduce burning, redness, and irritation, based on its purported cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials that directly support the efficacy or safety of sandalwood for conjunctivitis in humans. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on longstanding traditional practices rather than rigorous research. While sandalwood essential oil and extracts have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects in vitro and in animal studies, these findings have not been specifically validated in the context of conjunctivitis in humans. Furthermore, applying essential oils or herbal pastes near the eyes poses risks of irritation or allergic reaction. In summary, while the traditional use of sandalwood for conjunctivitis is documented, scientific evidence for its efficacy and safety is minimal, and it is not recommended as a primary or sole treatment for this condition in modern medical practice.
