Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Swertia species, particularly Swertia chirayita, have a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, including for a variety of inflammatory and infectious conditions. In the context of conjunctivitis (commonly known as "pink eye"), traditional healers have sometimes used decoctions or extracts of Swertia as eye washes or topical applications, based on the plant's reputed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and cooling properties. However, this practice is primarily documented in ethnobotanical and traditional medicine literature rather than in clinical or pharmacological research. There is very limited scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Swertia for conjunctivitis. Most available studies focus on its general anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities, often in vitro or in animal models. While these properties provide a theoretical basis for benefit in conjunctivitis, direct clinical studies or rigorous trials in humans for this condition are lacking. As such, the use of Swertia for conjunctivitis remains rooted in tradition rather than validated science. Additionally, the safety and efficacy of topical ocular application have not been well established, making it important for patients to exercise caution and consult healthcare professionals before use.
