Evidence supporting the use of: Agastache
For the health condition: Constipation (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Agastache, commonly known as Korean mint or huò xiāng (藿香) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used for centuries primarily to address digestive issues, particularly nausea, vomiting, and poor appetite. Classical TCM texts describe Agastache as an aromatic herb that "transforms dampness," harmonizes the stomach, and stops vomiting. While it is widely used for digestive complaints, its application for constipation is less directly recorded. In some traditional herbal formulas, Agastache is included to support overall digestive function, which may indirectly help with constipation if the underlying cause is a weak or sluggish digestion associated with "dampness" or stagnation. However, Agastache is not considered a primary herb for constipation in TCM; instead, herbs with moistening or purgative actions are more commonly chosen. There is minimal direct reference in TCM literature to Agastache being used specifically to relieve constipation in adults. Scientific studies on Agastache focus mostly on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiemetic properties, rather than its effects on bowel movements. Consequently, the evidence supporting Agastache for adult constipation is rooted in tradition and is limited, with only indirect support from its broader digestive uses.
