Bacopa monnieri (commonly known as bacopa or Brahmi) is primarily recognized for its cognitive and neuroprotective properties, but it has also been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as a mild laxative. Recent scientific studies have provided some support for its use in constipation, particularly in adults. Bacopa contains saponins, bacosides, and other phytochemicals that are believed to exert a mild stimulatory effect on the digestive tract, potentially aiding in bowel motility and function.

In preclinical studies, extracts of Bacopa monnieri have demonstrated a prokinetic effect on the gastrointestinal tract, increasing intestinal transit in animal models. Some human studies and clinical observations suggest that Bacopa may help to relieve mild constipation, likely due to its influence on gut motility and nervous system modulation. A 2019 randomized controlled trial in adults found that Bacopa supplementation led to a modest improvement in bowel movement frequency compared to placebo, though the study sample was relatively small.

Additionally, Bacopa’s adaptogenic effects may help reduce stress-related digestive issues, including constipation. However, while the scientific evidence is promising and justifies its use to some extent, Bacopa is not considered a primary laxative or first-line treatment for constipation. Its efficacy appears to be moderate and may be best suited for individuals with mild or functional constipation, rather than severe cases. More large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed to fully establish its role in constipation management.
