Broccoli is scientifically supported as a food that may help alleviate constipation, primarily due to its high fiber content. Dietary fiber is well established as a key factor in promoting healthy bowel movements and preventing constipation. One cup of cooked broccoli contains about 5 grams of fiber, including both soluble and insoluble forms, which help add bulk to stool and promote regularity.

Several studies have evaluated the role of broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables in digestive health. A small randomized controlled trial published in Food & Function (2017) found that daily consumption of broccoli sprouts improved bowel movement frequency and altered gut microbiota in healthy adults, suggesting a beneficial effect on gastrointestinal function. Additionally, the fiber in broccoli acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria that can further support regularity and overall colon health.

While most of the scientific evidence focuses on fiber-rich diets in general rather than broccoli specifically, the inclusion of broccoli as part of a high-fiber diet is in line with current medical recommendations for managing and preventing constipation in adults. There are no traditional medicinal systems that specifically recommend broccoli for constipation, but its regular use in the diet is supported by modern nutritional science.
