Carrots have been traditionally used as a dietary remedy for constipation, particularly in folk medicine and home remedies. The rationale behind their use lies in their fiber content: carrots are a moderate source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, with approximately 2.8 grams of fiber per 100 grams of raw carrot. Dietary fiber is well-recognized for its ability to increase stool bulk and promote regular bowel movements, which can help alleviate mild constipation. In traditional practices, both raw and cooked carrots are consumed to support digestive health.
However, direct clinical trials specifically investigating the role of carrots in treating constipation are lacking. Most of the supporting data is extrapolated from broader studies on dietary fiber and its benefits for gastrointestinal motility. While carrots contribute to overall fiber intake, they are not among the highest-fiber vegetables, and more potent sources may be recommended in evidence-based guidelines for constipation.
