Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Coconut milk has traditionally been used in some cultures as a natural remedy for constipation, largely due to its fat content and mild laxative effect. In traditional medicine systems, especially in tropical regions where coconuts are a dietary staple, coconut products—including coconut milk—are believed to soften stools and promote bowel movements. This is attributed to the medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) present in coconut milk, which may help lubricate the digestive tract and facilitate easier passage of stool. Additionally, coconut milk contains some dietary fiber, though the amount is modest compared to whole coconut meat or other high-fiber foods.

However, robust scientific studies specifically examining coconut milk’s efficacy in treating constipation are lacking. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on its general nutritional profile. Some small studies suggest that increased fat intake can stimulate gut motility, which could theoretically help relieve constipation, but these findings are not specific to coconut milk. Thus, while coconut milk's use for constipation is supported by tradition and plausible mechanisms, there is insufficient scientific validation to recommend it as a primary treatment. People with chronic constipation should consult healthcare professionals and consider established dietary interventions, such as increasing water and fiber intake, rather than relying solely on coconut milk.
