Dates (Phoenix dactylifera) are traditionally consumed in many cultures for their potential benefits in digestive health, including the relief of constipation. Scientifically, dates are a rich source of dietary fiber, with approximately 6–8 grams of fiber per 100 grams. Dietary fiber, particularly insoluble fiber, increases stool bulk and promotes intestinal motility, which is a well-established mechanism for alleviating constipation. Several small clinical studies support this effect: for example, a 2014 randomized controlled trial found that healthy adults consuming 7 dates per day for 21 days experienced significant increases in stool frequency and improvements in bowel movement consistency compared to baseline. Additionally, a 2015 study demonstrated that date consumption improved fecal output and reduced symptoms of constipation in adult participants.
The fiber in dates is complemented by their content of sorbitol and other natural sugars, which may also exert mild laxative effects. However, while these studies indicate a beneficial effect, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are moderate, as most trials are limited in sample size and duration. Nonetheless, the biological plausibility, traditional use, and emerging clinical evidence justify considering dates as a supportive dietary intervention for mild constipation in adults.
