Digestion resistant dextrin, often marketed as a soluble dietary fiber, has scientific validation for its use in supporting and treating constipation in adults. Digestion resistant dextrin is a type of fiber derived from starch that resists digestion in the small intestine and reaches the colon largely intact. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses indicate that supplementation with digestion resistant dextrin increases stool frequency and improves stool consistency in adults with constipation. A 2017 meta-analysis published in "Nutrients" found that resistant dextrins (including digestion resistant dextrin) significantly increased stool frequency and softened stools in adults, compared to placebo. The likely mechanism is the fiber's ability to increase fecal bulk and water content, and its partial fermentation by colonic bacteria, which produces short-chain fatty acids that stimulate colonic motility. The safety profile is generally favorable, with mild gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., flatulence, bloating) being the most common side effects. While not as extensively studied as some other fibers (like psyllium), the available clinical evidence is robust enough for digestion resistant dextrin to be recommended by some guidelines as a fiber supplement for adults with mild to moderate constipation. Importantly, effects may vary by individual, and increasing fiber intake should generally be accompanied by adequate fluid intake to minimize side effects.
