Digestion resistant maltodextrin (DRM), also known as resistant maltodextrin or indigestible dextrin, is a type of soluble dietary fiber produced from starch. Its use in supporting or treating constipation in adults is backed by a growing body of scientific evidence. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the effects of DRM on bowel function in adults with constipation or infrequent bowel movements.

Studies have shown that supplementation with DRM increases stool frequency, improves stool consistency, and reduces symptoms of constipation compared to placebo. For instance, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics (2017) found significant improvements in bowel movement frequency and stool form among adults with constipation who consumed DRM daily. The beneficial effects are attributed to DRM’s ability to increase fecal bulk and water content as it passes undigested through the gastrointestinal tract, as well as its fermentation by colonic bacteria, which produces short-chain fatty acids that can stimulate colonic motility.

Systematic reviews, such as the 2022 review in Nutrients, have concluded that DRM is effective and well-tolerated for improving bowel regularity in constipated adults. Adverse effects are minimal and primarily limited to mild gastrointestinal symptoms at higher doses. Overall, the evidence base is robust, though most studies are of moderate duration and conducted in otherwise healthy populations.
